Speech for Chantemerle’s 59th Anniversary

Ladies and gentlemen, dear colleagues, dear students,

Today, we are celebrating a birthday—a wonderful birthday: the 59th anniversary of our beloved school, Chantemerle. This anniversary is more than a simple commemoration; it is a living testament to a vision, a commitment, and a passion for education.

Nearly six decades ago, on April 1st, 1966, Jean and Mathilde Wegmüller founded this institution with a deep belief that education could change lives. Their dream was to create a place where every student could grow, learn, and flourish in an exceptional environment.

Victor Hugo once wrote: “When you open a school, you close a prison.” This quote perfectly captures the work undertaken by Jean and Mathilde Wegmüller. By opening the doors of Chantemerle, they offered far more than a place of learning; they built a temple of knowledge and a refuge from the challenges of society—a home where everyone finds their place and can become the best version of themselves.

The first steps of this one-of-a-kind school are etched in the memories of those who were there at the very beginning. The very first student to walk through the doors of Chantemerle was named Michel. The first teacher, Mrs. Borlaz, instilled in the early students the spirit of excellence and kindness that still lives on today. And how could we forget Barry, the school’s first dog—a faithful Saint Bernard who watched over the grounds, imitating his masters.

Today, we hold a special thought for Mathilde, whose presence remains in every stone of this school, in every student’s smile, in every lesson taught. I know she loved poetry—especially that of Rimbaud—and as someone who believes in the eternal kingdom, I am deeply convinced that she watches over us and continues to guide us.

As for you, dear Mr. Wegmüller, we express our deepest gratitude and utmost admiration for leading this institution with such dedication. It is an honour for me to have been part of this journey for the past five years, and I believe this feeling is shared by every member of our educational community.

Dear students, dear colleagues, it is now up to us to keep this legacy alive—to carry these values forward and to continue making Chantemerle a place of excellence, respect, sharing, and personal growth.

Happy birthday to Chantemerle, and long live its spirit!

Thank you.
