Restrictions on admission to EPFL and the ETH for students with an international diploma

EPFL (Federal Polytechnic Institute of Lausanne) and its equivalent in Zurich (ETH) introduce an admission limit for foreign diplomas and the International Baccalaureate (IB).

From the start of the 2025 academic year, and for at least four years, EPFL will be limiting the number of students in the first year of the Bachelor’s program to 3000. Holders of an upper secondary education certificate from an EU, EFTA or UK member state, or an International Baccalaureate (IB) will be admitted at the beginning of August, subject to availability of places. The overall grade point average (or total points) on the certificate of studies will be decisive in ranking and selecting these candidates. Registration for the entrance exam has also been restricted.

The admission of students holding a federal or cantonal Matura diploma will not change, and students holding Swiss Maturités are guaranteed a place.
